The Digital Business Card, Left at the Digital Coffee Shop

Categories: News & Commentary, Open Source

Digital CAfeI'm a big fan of the ponder, the wonder, even the mull.  I'm sitting here at a local coffee shop waiting for a potential client to arrive and I had a thought… This may, or may not, be news to you… I suppose it really depends on your objective.

I'm in the process of implementing/testing several "tools" to increase SEO. Having been very familiar with several of these tools in the past, I've decided to focus heavily on them to see what kind of results I can get. You know what "tools' I speak of… Digg, Del.icio.us, etc…

Many folks post for the sake of posting.  The more the merrier, right? Is that how you think? Or is that just how I thought? See,  I tend to think that's not really how it works.

Imagine, if you will, that you have a box of business cards?  The objective to head out and pass out your cards to potential businesses that might need your services, or to like-minded folks that may want to share contacts/leads, etc… a networking buddy. Now, when you're off and you're out, what are you plans on passing out these cards? Are you going to stop in at every business and give them a card for each day of the week? So, at the local children's shoe store, are going to hand a few cards to everybody in there as well as each and every employee?  If so, what's goal here… What I'm really trying to say is, What the fu(& are you doing? I don't know about you, but I'd feel  like a complete jackass do that. I'd run out of business cards 5 stores deep… How effective was that initiative? How RELEVANT was it?  That's the key here…  RELEVANCE. Pass the cards to those who might pick up the phone and use it… Go places where you think you might find those people.  Now, I might be wrong here… who knows, you might gain a considerable amount of business by passing out network technology business cards to the local doggy salon.

Now let's apply that principle to the internet today. What do you post about?  Do you write articles about doggy costumes? And those articles, do you post in IT Forums? Yeah… that makes lots of sense. What I've found is that if you take your business cards (articles) and give them out to the people who care, then it's much more likely that your marketing initiatives gain value and you get noticed. Keep in mind I'm not speaking strictly to SEO here. What I'm saying here is that if you approach the right people with the right stuff, you'll get results. But if you approach LOTS of the "right" people, with the right stuff, then you get big results… You'll get more business, more visitors, better PageRank, etc…  Use tools like Digg, and Del.icio.us to pass your business card. But only pass it to those who want it… Post in forums, that apply to subject matter.

SO WHAT'S MY POINT AND WHY DO I FEEL LIKE STATING THE OBVIOUS? THIS IS WHY.

These tools can be used for more than SEO and social presence. It can be used to gain new clients or readers…

Don't just sit in one coffee shop all day long, passing out your cards to all regulars and all the people that walk through the doors. Go about your day and promote your craft, as you normally would. But when you stop by the local starbucks or have small talk with the receptionist, pin up or pass out your card… pretty soon you'll have hi visibility and perhaps a whole new breed of clientèle.  But remember, only give out your card to those who care. Otherwise, your killing your value and credibility.
