GoDaddy sucks, man

You know, GoDaddy does suck. I opened my email this morning to see another  one of their ICANN letters requiring me to update my info. I then came across this guy’s blog encountering the same thing. http://fvort.com/archive/2008/03/13/godaddy-uses-icann-domain-verification-for-marketing-purposes.aspx

“This has to be the most asinine marketing tactic I have seen in a very long time. GoDaddy uses the threat of losing your domain to force you to go the GoDaddy website. Of course they only want to sell you ore services.

According to the email below domain administrators and registrants *must* go to the GoDaddy website to verify information and they include a threat of possibly losing your domain because you do not update the information on file.”

Important ICANN Notice Regarding Your Domain Name(s)
*****************************************

Dear Jason Mayfield,

Several months ago you received notice to update the contact information for your domain name(s). According to our records, you have not completed that update. It’s important that you do so immediately.

Under ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) rules and the terms of your registration agreement, PROVIDING FALSE CONTACT INFORMATION CAN BE GROUNDS FOR DOMAIN NAME CANCELLATION (to review the ICANN policy, visit: http://www.icann.org/whois/wdrp-registrant-faq.htm).

ICANN annually requires that all accredited registrars (like Go Daddy) ask their domain administrators/registrants to review domain name contact data, and make any changes necessary to ensure accuracy. To review/update your contact data, simply:

     + Go to http://www.godaddy.com?isc=ICANN0208a
NOTE: If the link does not work, copy and paste the URL into your browser.
+ Click on the "ICANN Domain Confirmation" icon at the top of the page
+ You will be taken to a landing page and asked to enter your Domain Information Key:
118E75FA-6DBB-4178-983D-815F414B7C82
+ Enter your key and click "Go."

Next, simply review the contact information for each domain name. To make a correction, log in to "My Account" with your customer number or log in name and password. Click "Manage Domains," select the domain to update, then click "Contact." If you find that your domain contact data is accurate, there's no need to take action. If, however, your domain contact information is inaccurate, you must correct it.

Should you have any questions, please email us at support@godaddy.com or call our customer support line at (480) 505-8877.

Thanks for your attention and thank you for being a GoDaddy.com, Inc. customer.

Sincerely,
GoDaddy.com, Inc. Domain Support

If you are the domain administrator of more than one GoDaddy.com domain account, you may receive this notice multiple times.

Although I use GoDaddy now, I certainly don’t intend on using them much longer. GoDaddy you suck. Bob Parsons, you still suck.

  6. Em..

If they are required to do this by law, whats the big deal?

If you own a domain and choose for godaddy to maintain it for you, then you are responsible for keeping up with whatever they do…

  7. Your information made my work much easier to create a web page for me. I use this code all the time and it really helps to save me money while brainstorming ideas for domains. Other codes in this family include ZINE1 (Save 10% on anything), and ZINE2 (Save $5 off $30).

  9. I am a web designer/programmer, I love to refer my customers to Godaddy.com, it just seems like it would be the best hosting company for my clients….But I realized Godaddy has the WORST customer service i have ever dealt with.

First, it would take 3 weeks for a person to call me back to tell me that someone is looking at my issue with coldfusion/linux. When I got the phone call the guy told me someone is taking a look at it and I should have a response within 72 hours MAX. Now that is comforting to hear that someone is actually doing some work on this after 3 weeks, Haha.

Now it’s been over 4 weeks or another 8 days after the phone call, and still no response on that issue. Therefore I took the liberty to change from linux/coldfusion to windows/coldfusion Monday (today is Friday). Yay, it works like how it should, but now we have another issue, I’ve used a custom cfx script called cfx_image to change the image sizes for the site.

It’s been 4 days since I put in the request to upload this script. I had to call today to figure out what is the issue with adding this cfx script. Of course, no one from the “Technical” department will know the answer, because it was sent to “Advanced Technical” support. I’m pretty sure that if I get a response back it would be (this would be an example of the response time and rediculous questions): “We will need your customer ID and Pin” 72 hours later after I have sent the information, “We don’t support custom scripts”. I will response “why not?” and 72 hours later…some answer. As you can see that will make it at total of 6 days for 2 questions.

Well I know now that this will definitely change my perspective of referring customers to Godaddy.com…

  11. I have used GoDaddy for years but the past two or three years their customer service has just sunk to record low levels. So I’ve been moving domains as they expire to another more customer friendly registrar. Additionally, I have been alarmed by stories about GoDaddy I have read online concerning such things as the taking of familyalbum.com and hijacking customers’ domains due to (unproven) spam reports and then they hold the domain hostage until the customer pays up to $199.00 per domain to reinstate it.

In my case, I recently closed hosting for a couple of domains and then they send me to a survey page where I gave an honest but unflattering review of GoDaddy’s service. Two days later I get a mystery bill for some service I did not order or use. (Customer service reprisal? Hey, Bob P…are you paying any attention to what your employees are doing to your customers? I think not!) So I call them (on my dime; they do not have a toll free phone) and I have to wait nearly 10 minutes to speak to a rep.

Now, I admit I should have known this sort of thing was possible from the outset as when you register a domain they send you through page after page of upsell offers with so many buttons for stuff you don’t want it is almost like navigating a mine field. It’s quite clear they do not give a crap about the customer and are keenly into getting as much of his money possible. But they try to claim how customer service oriented they are and it’s complete baloney. They stink.

It appears to me that the company has pretty much bottomed out as the owner becomes more and more self-obsessed (see his blog), spends outlandish amounts of cash for commercials that have nothing to do with product and chase after race car drivers like some NASCAR groupie. I don’t know if it’s a midlife crisis or what, but the dude ought to pay more attention to his company and their customer service instead of nursing his ego. I certainly would NOT recommend GoDaddy (and I don’t) and my dealings with this company will be finished within the next few months, if not sooner. In my multi-year experience as a GoDaddy customer, and in my opinion, GoDaddy sucks to the Nth degree.

  12. I can totally relate to your frustrations, guys. I just had the most horrible experience of my life with godaddy’s customer support. Seriously. Godaddy just doesn’t care about its reputation at all. If you google “Godaddy sucks”, entries go way back to 2005. Instead of improving the quality of its customer service, it’s free falling to the bottomless pit.
I’m with you guys. I’m moving my domain names and my clients’ domain names far away from Godaddy. I’m done with the company.

  13. Well, after having a freaking website online and working 4 years, marketing, t-shirts, advertising campaigns, hours upon hours of dedicated people working their hardest, I joined BLOW DADDY (that’s what they did to my ecommerce site). They freaking sold my domain name to someone else, claimed the registration key from my existing registrar was incorrect and not working, but never got back to me in time, even though I’ve had the same freaking key for over 4 years and it was written on paper, and the numbers were correctly entered, you’d think that perhaps one of the idiots over there would know how to type, so now someone who bought the domain has all the PR and is getting all my business. There should be a law against stupidity, they should lock them all up on a deserted island so they can spend all their time with each other, while the rest of the normal world can proceed with their lives full force. I think BLOW DADDY has a lot of wannabe geek idiots who answer phones to apologize because my 14 year olds who are not IT’s heard the conversation over the computer speaker and it made no sense, they did not want to admit to messing up. They however were very RUDE and did not want to say more than it was my mistake for not getting the right registration key to them in time AAAARRRRRGHHHHHHHH!!!!!! So many stupid people, so little time to deal with them all and listen to their crock of crap. Buyer beware, just because you get a Transfer Request Acknowledgement via email from BLOW DADDY does not mean that they received and will webhost your domain (keep it safe from vultures). This was their main problem. They continued to tell me that an acknowledgement is just like a receipt and unless my email stated that the Transfer Request was completed (some bullcrap technicality that they added on as a feature to postpone doing anything with your website while they all stand around the phone laughing at the caller getting madder than hell) you are basically screwed like me. How bout taking up a class action lawsuit against these cyberbullies? Crap, Homestead was better than BLOW DADDY and they’re just a simple place, nothing to look at.
