Today Joomla released 1.5.3, just a month after 1.5.2 as the latest version of Joomla’s next generation of the 1.5 architecture.

While Joomla 1.5.x is very, VERY promising, and a big improvement over the 1.0.x architecture,
Joomla 1.5.x is just not there yet. I’d call it a “Vista” product.

How is Joomla 1.5 like Windows Vista? It doesn’t work well with about 90% of the existing components, modules & plugins.

There are very, VERY few components & extensions available for 1.5. If Joomla’s core features are all you need, then Joomla 1.5 is for you.

If you want to update all your Joomla 1.5 sites monthly or so, with their next “stable” version, then again, Joomla 1.5 is for you.

If you require extensions and plugins, Joomla 1.5 isn’t there yet, and it doesn’t look like it’ll happen soon.

With Joomla 1.5 being updated as frequently as it has been, it’s really far from stable in my opinion, yet some members of the Joomla community are attempting to push the architecture as being READY.

One major rumbling at a popular Joomla Template club indicates the template club will only be desiging templates for Joomla 1.5, dropping the 1.0 architecture completely. Their latest template is only available in a 1.5 version, with staff indicating “it’s time to move on…”

I can’t imagine that move will drive more business for them, only hurt their existing membership as many members are planning to “move on…” to a new template club.

So, while the rest of the world is quickly and expediantly forging full-steam ahead with Joomla 1.5, only to run into brick walls at high-speed when trying to find a functional component or plugin, we here at MyJoomlaGuide.com will continue to produce videos for both versions, 1.5 & the extremely stable 1.0.xx.

I’m excited about the future of Joomla 1.5, and I’m not willing to abandon a tried and truely stable system for one with so many less features.

TemplateMonster and buytemplates.net  – a couple of the bigger “traditional” template builders who have jumped on the Joomla! wagon. So how do they compare with Joomla-exclusive designers?

I reviewed both TemplateMonster and buytemplates.net. Both produce professional designs… I liked the customization and the support that I received from buytemplates.net. The prices were similar, but for those who want something designed from scratch, buytemplates.net had the upper hand.

Although the traditional Joomla houses are constantly coming out with state-of-the-art, full-of-bells-and-whistles themes, there are definitely some good things about the other guys.(TemplateMonster and buytemplates.net )

1. Templates are new and fresh
2. Templates don’t look like normal Joomla! templates
3. Built strong (typically)

Good stuff coming from both of these guys… definitely check ‘em out.

There’s been a lot of discussion regarding the integration of Joomla and Magento. Is it worth it? Perhaps.

Firefox is too FAT:

Hunting around a bit I found an excellent little post that explains how to stop this memory vacuum from getting away from you.

1. Simply type about:config in your browser’s address bar.

2. On the resulting screen, right-click and select New -> Boolean.

3. In the input box that appears, type config.trim_on_minimize. Press enter.

4. Select True, and hit enter.What this does is causes Firefox to dump to your hard drive when you minimize it. Upon re-maximization, it loads back into RAM, but at a fraction of the bloated size it was. As an example, I just checked Firefox’s memory usage. With three tabs open, I was sitting around 80 MB of RAM being used. On minimization, this immediately dropped to under 10 MB. The upon maximization, it went up to 40 MB or so.

Firefox is too Slow:

If you’re on high speed Internet, you’re also going to want to consider this little speed-up trick. By default Firefox is set to only download pages to your browser with four simultaneous connections. This is alright if you’re on dial-up, but broadband can handle a lot more than that.

1. Again type about:config in your browser’s address bar.

2. On the config page, look for these three entries: network.http.pipelining, network.http.proxy.pipelining, and network.http.pipelining.maxrequests.

3. Change network.http.pipelining and network.http.proxy.pipelining to True.

4. Change network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to a higher number based on your net speed – somewhere between 10 and 30 ought to do it.

5. As a final step, right-click the screen and select New-> Integer. Name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to “0″. This sets the amount of time the browser sits on its ass before acting.See the original article at Forever Geek. Appropriately named FireTune, the free application from Totalidea Software tunes up Firefox to work faster (very likely by implementing some of the above).
